I don't know about you, but being an entrepreneur and running a small business can get exhausting some times - there's always something new to learn.
Don't get me wrong - - I'm not complaining...really!
Running a small business such as a voice-over company requires a pretty hefty amount of self-motivation and self-reliance.
Charles Revson ,the founder of Revlon, was quoted as saying that in the early days of his business he would get up in the morning and start walking from salon to salon in Manhattan pitching his nail polish - not stopping until the end of the day.
His laser-focus and determination was driven by a core concept.
He said "If I didn't sell, I didn't eat."
That's a pretty good motivator, and as time went on and Revlon grew to a multi-million dollar business, Charles Revson ate pretty well.
I sincerely hope that the stakes for you in your VO career aren't as high as that, but the story does help to create a mindset to always stay hungry and never stop learning - at least it does for me :).
You hear me talk a lot about obstacles on my podcast. I love to hear from my guests about the challenges they faced and what they did to overcome them.
The only way I've discovered to truly leap over an obstacle is to force myself out of my comfort zone and learn something new.
Voice-overs? When I started out I knew absolutely nothing about the industry and what steps I needed to take to be successful.
E-book? I'd never written a book before, and certainly didn't know the first thing about how to create and self-publish a book.
Podcast? Forget about it! I didn't have a clue what a podcast was, let alone how to record interviews, and upload them to iTunes.
On-line Course? You guessed it. I'd never created one before, and not being a techie, this one was really challenging!
What I did know with certainty, however, was that I wanted to do each of those things.
Once I got clear with "what" I wanted to do, the "how" began to work itself out - coming from my willingness to learn something new. And that has made all the difference in the world.
My hope and wish for you is that you achieve all you set out to do this coming year and beyond. Figure out with as much certainty as you can what you want to do this year.
Get your entrepreneur on and start knocking those obstacles down one-by-one - and if I can be a resource for you to make that happen, I'd be honored to help!
All the best,
