One of the questions I ask each of my guests is what obstacles they’ve encountered in their journey and, more importantly, what did they learn from them.
I’ve taken their answers and boiled them down to 3 simple steps that hopefully will help you get over the hump when obstacles start to bog you down.
Step 1: Get Focused – Many of my guests stress the importance of really taking the time to figure out what you’re truly passionate about, especially when it comes to busting through obstacles in the voice-over industry.
If you don’t know where you’re going, it’s easy to get lost, lose focus and get bogged down – or worse – quit altogether when those obstacles appear.
A great exercise is to ask yourself, what would your day look like if you were the absolute best at what you love to do? How would your day be different? How would you spend your time?
If you give yourself permission to let your mind explore these questions, it should help get you focused on how you’re going to start to create that life.
Step 2: Get Organized – How many times have you’ve been in a situation where you have so many ideas floating around in your head that it seems impossible to get anything accomplished? Anyone who is a creative person has experienced this, and it’s tough to get past it.
One of the best ways that I know to make headway is to organize your thoughts into smaller segments. Write down each of your ideas and prioritize them in smaller chunks. Not only will this help organize your thoughts, it will make it easier for you to actually accomplish a few of the tasks. Once you get a few small victories you’ll feel better and be empowered to keep moving forward.
Many of my guests recommend this strategy and spend a part of each week concentrating on a smaller section of their business. Compartmentalizing allows them to stay organized as they move toward their goals, and it can help you too.
Step 3: Get Going – Once you get focused on what it is you want to accomplish, and get yourself organized, the next step is to get going.
This may be the hardest step of all, because there will always be self-doubt and the opinions of others to overcome. Many of my guests had to overcome people telling them that they were not good enough, or that they should get a “safe” job.
The voice-over industry is competitive and the reality is that any goal worth accomplishing requires hard work and sacrifice, but to a person, each of my guests were told at some point in their careers “no.” Rejection is part of process in the acting world.
As Wayne Gretsky said, “you miss 100% of the shots you never take.” If your goal is worth attaining, it’s worth fighting for. Learn from the best in your industry and understand that obstacles are just hurdles to jump over.
We’ll be getting into more specifics on my podcast. (did I mention I can’t wait for our June 1st launch!)
All of my guests had to overcome obstacles in their voice-over journeys to get to where they are today, and their stories are inspiring!
In the meantime, I’d love to connect with you over on my Facebook page and onTwitter. I post all the time about things that are helping and inspiring me on my journey. Hopefully they’ll inspire you as well.
All the best,
